
The Whole-Body Iodine Connection
What if we've been thinking about iodine too narrowly?
When most people hear the word iodine, they immediately think of the thyroid.
And for good reason. Iodine is essential for making thyroid hormones, which help regulate metabolism, growth, development, and many processes throughout the body.
But what if the thyroid is only part of the iodine story?
As we continue our Nutrient Revival Series, let's ask a bigger question:
If iodine only mattered to the thyroid, why does the body have ways of transporting and concentrating iodine in other tissues?
This takes us beyond the thyroid and into a much larger conversation about iodine and the beautifully interconnected design of the human body.
Iodine Is More Than a “Thyroid Mineral”
Iodine is an essential micronutrient. Our bodies cannot make it, so we must obtain it through food and other sources.
We often associate nutrients with one primary function:
Calcium with bones. Iron with blood. Iodine with the thyroid.
But the body isn't quite that simple.
The body also has ways of moving and using iodine beyond the thyroid, including in the salivary glands, stomach, digestive tract, and breast tissue.
That doesn't mean iodine performs the same function in every tissue. But it does challenge us to look at iodine through a wider lens.
The thyroid may be iodine's best-known destination, but it isn't the whole story.
How Does Iodine Get Where It Needs to Go?
The body has specialized systems that help move iodide from the bloodstream into certain cells.
One of these is called the sodium-iodide symporter, or NIS.
You don't need to remember the name. The important part is what it tells us:
Our bodies were designed with mechanisms for moving iodine into specific tissues.
This raises a fascinating root-cause question:
Where does the body need iodine, and why?
Iodine and the Digestive System
The stomach is one interesting piece of the puzzle.
Iodide transport has been identified in gastric tissue, and the salivary glands also have the ability to concentrate iodide.
This doesn't prove some of the broader claims we hear about iodine “healing the gut.” But it does give us reason to be curious about iodine's relationship with the digestive system.
Sometimes good health education begins not with an answer, but with a better question.
The Overlooked Breast Connection
Breast tissue is another important part of the iodine conversation.
In fact, much of the modern interest surrounding whole-body iodine has included questions about iodine and breast health. The Iodine Crisis devotes significant attention to this relationship and the history surrounding it.
This doesn't mean iodine should be viewed as a treatment for breast disease.
It does mean that breast tissue belongs in the iodine conversation, especially when we are trying to understand iodine beyond the thyroid.
What About Reproductive Health?
Iodine has also generated interest in relation to the ovaries and reproductive system and one that I personally believe warrants every woman to look further into the benefits in iodine and reproductive health.
Now, some of the broader claims surrounding iodine and reproductive health are still debated and need further research. But that's exactly why this conversation is worth having.
We don't have to accept every claim we encounter.
We also don't have to stop asking questions simply because the answers aren't complete.
Knowledge grows through curiosity. And Root Cause healing begins with knowledge and curiosity about your healing.
What If Deficiency Isn't Only About Diet?
Here's where the iodine story becomes even more interesting.
We usually think of nutrient deficiency this way:
Not enough nutrient in the diet → deficiency.
But could environmental exposures also influence the equation?
The Iodine Crisis raises concerns about bromine exposure and its possible relationship with iodine status. The book points to historical changes in food production and the increased presence of brominated compounds in our environment as part of its argument.
Iodine, bromine, chlorine, and fluorine belong to the same chemical family, known as halogens. This has led to important questions about how these elements may interact within the body.
And that gives us another root-cause question:
What if nutrient deficiency isn't only about what we're failing to consume, but also about what we're being exposed to?
We'll explore that question much more deeply in Week 3.
Look Deeper
Root-cause wellness teaches us to move beyond asking:
“What's wrong with this organ?”
Instead, we can also ask:
What does the body need?
Is it receiving enough?
Is something interfering with how it uses those nutrients?
And are we looking at the whole body rather than one isolated system?
Nutrition, digestion, environment, lifestyle, and nutrient balance are interconnected.
The more we understand those connections, the better questions we can ask about our own health.
